Sometimes there is so much happening around us that the only way to find balance is to turn our attention inward. “Inward Opening” was born from exactly that feeling.
At 145 × 145 cm, the painting has a strong presence in a space, but its impact does not come from its size alone. I am drawn to the tension between the bold lines and the more delicate areas. Seen up close, layers of colour and details emerge that are not always visible in photographs. Some aspects of the painting reveal themselves only with time.
One of the things that interests me in painting is what happens beneath the surface. I don’t try to tell a specific story, but rather to capture a state of mind or a feeling. A moment when there are too many thoughts, too much movement and noise, yet somewhere within it all there is still a quieter place.
That’s where the painting’s title comes from. Sometimes you need to pause to notice what would otherwise go unnoticed.
I don’t want to fully explain the meaning of an abstract painting for the viewer. I like it when a work leaves room for each viewer’s own experience and interpretation. The same painting can feel calm to one person and intense to another. My own relationship with my paintings also changes over time. Later on, I may notice something in them that I didn’t see while I was painting them.
If this piece has caught your eye, I can send you additional photos, close-ups, or a video so you can get a better sense of the painting before making a decision. You’re also welcome to arrange a visit to see it in person at my studio in Haapsalu.
